The Essential Guide to Relocating Your Pet to Europe
Relocating to Europe is an exhilarating life transition, but bringing your beloved dog or cat across international borders can feel like navigating an impenetrable maze of red tape. Between European Union import mandates, airline health protocols, strict crate dimension standards, and varying customs regulations, a single oversight can derail months of careful planning. At GÜNZ Pet Relocation, our daily mission is making sure your family stays together without the trauma of border delays or quarantine holds.
1. The 15-Digit Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)
Every pet entering the European Union must be identified with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant, 15-digit microchip. This microchip acts as your pet’s legal passport number. If your dog or cat currently has an older or non-standard chip, your veterinarian must implant an ISO-compliant chip, or you must travel with an appropriate scanner.
Most critically, the microchip must be scanned and officially recorded before or at the exact time of the rabies vaccination. If the rabies vaccine is administered even one day prior to microchipping, border veterinary inspectors will classify the vaccine as invalid.
2. Rabies Vaccination & The 21-Day Incubation Period
All pets older than 12 weeks must be vaccinated against rabies. Once the initial vaccination is administered post-microchipping, you must observe a mandatory 21-day waiting period before your pet can cross into the EU. This waiting window guarantees that protective antibodies have fully developed.
If you are relocating from an “unlisted” country with elevated rabies risks, your pet will also need a Rabies Titer (RNATT) blood test at an EU-approved laboratory, followed by a mandatory 3-month wait before departure.
3. The EU Non-Commercial Health Certificate (Annex IV)
Pets moving from non-EU countries (such as the United States, Canada, the UK, or Australia) must travel with an official EU Animal Health Certificate. Key parameters include:
- The 5-Day Movement Window: Under non-commercial rules (Regulation EU 576/2013), your pet must travel within 5 days of your own travel date. If they travel outside this window, commercial import rules and commercial customs clearing procedures will apply.
- Government Endorsement: The health certificate must be completed by an accredited veterinarian and subsequently endorsed by your country’s official government body (e.g., USDA in the United States, CFIA in Canada, or APHA in the United Kingdom).
- 10-Day Validity: The certificate is valid for entry into the EU for 10 days from the date of final government endorsement up to the point of entry inspection.
4. Tapeworm (Echinococcus) Treatment for Specific Destinations
While standard EU rules apply across most member states, countries free from the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm—such as Ireland, Northern Ireland, Finland, Malta, and Norway—require special antiparasitic treatments for dogs. This treatment containing Praziquantel must be given by a licensed vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1 to 5 days) before arrival.
5. Choosing Between Air Cargo, Cabin Travel, or VIP Ground
How your pet physically covers the distance depends largely on their size, breed, and destination:
- Manifest Air Cargo: The primary option for medium-to-large breeds travelling intercontinentally. Handled through dedicated live animal logistics with climate-controlled, pressurized holds.
- In-Cabin Travel / Flight Nanny: Available for small pets (typically under 8 kg including carrier) with participating airlines, allowing your pet to travel accompanied inside the passenger cabin.
- VIP Ground Transport: Once inside Europe, or for moves originating within the UK and continental Europe, customized ground courier vehicles offer stress-free, door-to-door transport with frequent comfort stops, avoiding tarmac stress entirely.
6. Choosing an Airline-Approved IATA Crate
Airlines strictly enforce IATA Live Animal Regulations (LAR). Your pet’s travel kennel must allow them to stand naturally without their head or ears touching the ceiling, turn around easily, and lie down in a natural position. Rigid plastic or wooden crates with metal hardware and dual ventilation bowls are mandatory for cargo holds.
